Google’s commitment to keep their services free from hackers should be appreciated. Last year they introduced 2-step verification process and now they are testing a more secure way to access Google services from a public computer. Google Sesame (beta) as they call it lets you scan a QR code using mobile phones that will securely login and allow access to Google services on a remote public PC without you having to enter password. How awesome is that.
To login to Google services on a public computer that is prone to key loggers and other spyware Google suggests you to use Google Sesame. Any smart phone or a tablet device owner with a decent camera can scan QR code that will lead you to a login page where you need to enter Google login details. Once granted access from your mobile device, Google will allow you to automagically access Gmail and other services on remote public compter. This makes sure you are not exposing username and password to keylogger or spyware installed on them.
To begin with install QR code scanner app on your smartphone be it iOS (iPhone, iPad), Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry or Symbian OS. If using iOS you can install RedLaser app and for Android apps I suggest you go through our post here. Once after downloading and installing, launch the app to scan QR code displayed on this Google page. Scan it and the scanner app will open a secure page where you need to enter Google login details to grant access to your account. Once done a session will be created that lets you access Gmail and other related services on that public computer. This is the best and the most reliable security measure available till date.
PS: Google pulled down the “Sesame” project but lets hope that it moves out of Google’s labs soon.
