Click on the "padlock" icon at top right in blue bar on your timeline, click "who can contact me" , at "who can send friend requests" click "friends of friends"..there is no way to "remove" the button , the choice is either "everyone" or "friends of friends"...but at least the setting of "friends of friends" will prevent the "public" from sending friend requests.
